It's a Wusthof. Need I say more? : Wusthof Gourmet 8-Inch Cook's Knife

I have been wanting a Wusthof knife of my own for a long time but was always put off by the price. Most places I shopped for kitchen implements only sold these amazing knives in sets starting at $300. When I saw this knife for under $60 on Amazon, I had to try it.

It was worth every penny.

This is the best knife to try from Wusthof before committing to a set. I find myself going to this knife again and again when I cook because it has yet to fail me. I will say now to be careful when you first use it as I shaved one of my fingernails down when getting Top Chef zealous in the kitchen. Wusthof knives are the sharpest and most precise I've used. And this one is a perfect multi-purpose knife to have in the kitchen.

I look forward to purchasing more Wusthof knives to create my own set. If you're thinking about purchasing, do yourself a favor and get it. A great knife at a decent price.

First let me say I'm a Wusthof fan, I love this line of knives. In general I'd say you verily can't go wrong with the superior Ikon. It's balanced well, holds an edge, and has a wonderfully ergonomic handle. However, the 10" Chef's Knife misses the mark. The heel of the blade should be much deeper, or taller if you will. It doesn't seem much taller than the 8" Chef's Knife, which in essence defeats the usability or functionality of the extra length. Don't shy away from the superior Ikon, it's an foreseen, knife! But get the 8" Chef's Knife and put the extra few bucks into a paring knife.

Buy once, keep a lifetime : Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Cook's Knife

As a home cook, it took me quite awhile to rule to invest in an excellent knife. I can't stress sufficient what a disagreement it makes. This superior 8 inch chef's knife was my first Wusthof. It has exceptional heft and balance, fits comfortably into my hand (I have smallish hands, so this was an first concern) and, despite my fears and my experiences with other knives, I have yet to cut myself. A cheap, dull knife is more risky than a good, sharp one. This knife never slips, it cuts evenly and cleanly, and I *never* have to saw.

In expanding to discount store block knives (a waste of money, despite them being so much cheaper), I've normally used Chicago Cutlery and strongly prefer the Wusthof. It is much easier to clean (no wood cope to harbor microbes), contours comfortably into my hand (Cc does not), and I find it holds its sharp edge more readily (Cc needs frequent sharpening).

When I finally decided to buy it, I went to a cutlery store and tried out the Henckles and the Wusthof Grand Prix. This knife has much good balance and heft than did the Henckles (though I only tried it in the store) and just felt more comfortable in my hand than the Grand Prix. Additionally, Cooks magazine did a comparison test of chef's knives (ala buyer Reports) and put this knife at the top of their list, too.

The downside is that this knife is expensive, and it is hard to explicate the price for the regular home cook. In my experience, a high quality Wusthof is not a splurge. It is the right tool for the job. I buy one Wusthof knife at a time, and all the time keep them on my amazon wish list. This was my first, and is the most beneficial for generalized chopping tasks.

A drawer full of cheap knives is much less practical than a small range of a Wusthof superior chef's knife, paring knife and utility or "sandwich" knife. These three can tackle any job expertly. Do yourself a favor, get the right tool for the job.

I have lived with Wal-Mart and Target cheap knife sets for many years and got by just fine. But part of me wanted to know what I was missing spending by spending some money on good knives. After finding at recommendations I decided to go with this knife as my first "nice knife". Wow, the difference is worth the money. This knife is sharp, slices and chops whatever I have thrown at it, and with a merge passes on a honing tool it stays sharp. It feels great using it and the deal with has a nice curve in it that fits well in my hand. Needless to say, Wusthof has a lifetime customer in me and I have started building a set blade by blade. It's worth it.
